The seed of the department was sown in 1962 when Statistics was introduced as a special paper at the post graduate level in the Department of Mathematics. Realizing its widespread applications and importance, Statistics was given full status in 1973 and M.Sc. Mathematical Statistics was offered as a two-year –degree course. Growing number of students and research fellows necessitated the creation of independent department and thus, in 1985 the department of Mathematics was bifurcated and the department of Statistics and O.R. became a full-fledged department with seven faculty members (Prof. - 01, Reader - 01, Lecturer - 05). The Department runs a regular course of M.Sc. (Statistics) under the semester system and offers Ph.D in Statistics. The syllabus of the M.Sc. was revised in 2007-2008, keeping in view the UGC pattern. The Department has recently purchased the most valuable software SPSS for the students of Statistics, the training of which will enhance the placement chances of the students positively.
