Introduction to the Centre
The Women's Studies Research Centre, KurukshetraUniversity, Kurukshetra was established in February 1989. Supported by the University Grants Commission over the past twenty years of its existence the centre has been contributing to the pursuit of a more comprehensive, critical and balanced investigation of the cause of gender disparity by analyzing the structural and cultural factors and help develop alternate concepts, approaches and strategies for development. As part of the critical theory women's studies has served as an instrument that questions the traditionally held premises, theoretical categories and in addition to class, ethnicity, religion and caste as tools of analysis, gender as a social category has been included in the understanding of social reality.The Women's Studies Research Centre, KurukshetraUniversityis in the 3rdPhase of the University Grants Commission that is the highest phase for the purpose of work allocation and funding.The centre offers regular courses in Women’s Studies for students, University and College Teachers, Development Functionaries, Women Grass-root Workers, Panches, Sarpanches etc.

FACILITIES:
Library: The Centre has a rich collection of books, newsletters, journals, reports and periodicals. The Centre has approximately 2500 books and 15 Journals, national and international relating to Women’s Studies. The library subscribes to most of the important Women’s Studies Journals. Project reports, Census reports, Reports of the National Commission for Women are also documented in the library. The Centre has updated its library recently by adding 100 new books relating to Women’s Studies.
Teaching Lab: The Centre has developed a Computer Lab. for computer training course (Free of cost) for girl students of the university. Computers with allied items have been installed in the Lab out of the UGC grant received for the purpose. The course is also being offered to the regular students enrolled in the centre.

INFORMATION ON SEMINARS AND CONFERENCES HELD RECENTLY

The Centre organized 3 three days Residential Gender Sensitization Training of Trainers Workshops for Hisar and Jind Districts from 2-4 February, 2011, 9-11 February, 2011 and 14-16 February, 2011. These trainees have further been imparted training at Block level in the above 2 districts. The workshops were sponsored by the Department of Women & Child Development, Haryana.

The Centre organised Gender Sensitization Training to SMS members, SHG Pradhan, Women Panch, Sarpanch & Mahila Mandal Pradhan at the block level in 2 districts of Haryana i.e. Jind and Hisar from 3 March to 30 April, 2011. A total of 97 workshops of 35 participants each were organised. These workshops were sponsored by the Department of Women & Child Development, Haryana.

The Centre in collaboration with Gender Sensitization Committee Against Sexual Harassment organized a Panel Discussion on “Recognition and Elimination of Sexual Harassment in Higher Education Institutions” The Panelists were Prof. Karuna Chanana, formerly from JNU Delhi, Prof. Rajesh Gill, Director WSDC, Punjab University Chandigarh, Prof. Suman Gupta, Dept. of Law, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra, Prof. Leela Yadva, Chairperson GSCASH, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra and Prof. Reicha Tanwar, Coordinator of the Panel Discussion. About 250 participants attended the workshop. The participants were from various teaching and non-teaching departments of the university, UniversityCollege, University collegeof Education, Wardens, Banks, Post office, University Health Centre, Press and Research Scholars and students both male and female.

The Centre organized a UGC National Field Testing Workshop on Management Skills Enhancement Module under the scheme on Capacity Building of Women Managers in Higher Education from March 28- April 1, 2011. In this 5 days workshop 2 modules Human Resource Management in Higher Education Institutions and Recognition and Elimination of Sexual Harassment in Higher Education Institutions were field tested. A group of 28 participants from the states of Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Tamilnadu, Maharashtra, Kerala, Meghalaya, Karnataka and Rajasthan attended the workshop.

The Centre has been placed in Phase-III (which is the highest phase) in the XI Plan by the UGC Standing Committee on Women’s Studies based on its work and contribution to the discipline. The Phase III Centres are to serve as Nodal Centre for teaching/research and documentation for the region and develop as Advanced Research Centres.
Prof. Reicha Tanwar is the Northern Region Coordinator of the UGC Scheme on ‘CapacityBuildingfor Women Managers in Higher Education’. Under this scheme 13 workshops have been organized and coordinated in the last three years in various universities in North India.
