About Us

THE DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC & DANCE had originally been christened as the Department of Music and at present known as the Department of Music & Dance, it came into existence in the year 1975. It started its journey with students admitted to M.A. Music (Vocal) as well as M.A. Music (Instrumental) with intake capacity of 6 students in each option. Having taken into consideration the keenness and interest of more and more students aspiring for admittance to these subjects of music, the University on the recommendation of the teachers concerned decided to introduce M.Phil. Music (Vocal & Instrumental) w.e.f. the academic session 1981-82 with intake capacity of 10 aspiring students. Keeping this in view, the number of students admitted to these courses went from 12 to 36 in M.A. Music (Vocal & Instrumental) whereas the number of M.Phil. students went from 10 to 15. Since 2018-19 M.Phil Programme is discontinue.

In Department there are lots of opportunities for those students who want to go further for Research and higher studies in music. The Department has programme like Ph.D. for those students who are willing to do research in several interdisciplinary areas of music. In addition to this, the primary focus of the department remains on research work in the spheres of classical, vocal, instrumental and different forms of classical dances with inter disciplinary topics. The department also targets the attainments in the fields of music, folk dance of different States of India in general and the State of Haryana in particular. The department touches the cords of various musical instruments to produce a heart warming atmosphere

Department has produced Ph.D. scholars equal to the number of 170 till 31.11.2016 in Music Vocal as well as Instrumental, the department has brought academic laurels to the University. Needless to say, as many as 20 research scholars are still working keenly on different topics of research. Two teachers of Departments’ are doing Post Doctoral Research.

VISION
The department through its teaching faculty, students and non-teaching staff has a lofty vision about its march forward. We wish to cater to the different performing arts and popularize Indian Culture , Music and folk Musical forms & dances . The department also seeks the revival of the Indian Classical Music & dance by taking it to the door steps of the masses of India and abroad.

MISSION

We wish to refine the basic human instincts by inculcating in people the love & passion for music which is one of the greatest gifts of God to mankind.We desire for making this department a hub of cultural activities not only in Haryana but also at the national & international level.

As a student of this department, I aspired to one day be able to contribute to the legacy of our glorious institution. Now that I have been given this great opportunity, I hope to extend the journey of our institution on the path of greatness. Studying in the Department of Music, Kurukshetra University, is a truly different experience for the students. Here, the students can pursue their concurrent courses, while on the other hand, they also learn the traditional art forms of Indian classical music from a unique institute, which is a mixture of an age-old education system, i.e. the Guru-shishya parampara and institutionalized modern education system. I am fortunate to be in the position where I can listen to and solve the challenges that our students face, and make this learning experience just a little more valuable.
