I feel happy to welcome you to the Department of Mathematics of the premier institution Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra at the land of Bhagwad Gita. Knowledge of mathematics is essential for life, as mentioned in the VedangaJyotisha (c. 500 BC) that

यथाशिखामयूराणांनागानांमणयोयथा।

तद्वत्वेदाङ्गशास्त्राणांगणितंमूर्धनिस्थितम्॥

(Like the crest of the peacock, like the gem on the head of a snake, so is mathematics at the head of all knowledge).

The department of mathematics was established in the year 1961 under the visionary leadership of Late Prof. S.D. Chopra. Over these 51 years, the department has shown growth in all the directions and five other departments have taken their shapes out of it. Over the years, this department has had copious interdisciplinary collaborations and interactions in diverse areas with researchers and pioneers in several fields of mathematics like Seismology, Algebra and Analysis and more than 100 students have completed their Ph.D. degree from the department.

The department offers two years M.Sc. Mathematics programme which includes 14 core courses, 4 practical courses, 2 seminars , 2 open electives and 24 elective courses. At present, 14 elective courses run in the department. We strive to provide our students with the best learning environment along with impeccable education enabling them to gain the skills they need to shape their own future and that of the nation.This department not only focuses on training in the rudiments of mathematics, it also emphasizes in offering advanced courses on applications in modern science. The department offers Ph.D. programme also which comprises course work and research work.

Weekly seminar is distinct feature of curriculum in mathematics department. The programmes offered by the department equip students with a range of mathematical skills in problem-solving and presentation, preparing them to take on roles in a variety of situations in employment and research.

Department of Mathematics has two computing labs for M.Sc. Students and one Research Lab for Research Scholars.  The students of M.Sc. Mathematics 1st to 4th Semesters learn computational skills in Programming in C, MATLAB and R.  In the Research Lab of the Department two servers, IBM x 3650 Server (24) RACK-XEON-5460 and HCL INFINITI Global Line 2700 BD 2 Server XEON Dual Processor, are available for high end computing.  The Department has a spacious well stocked Library having more than 11,000 books and 7000 journals. Access to the numerous journals is being provided through consortium of UGC INFLIBNET.

Apart from mathematical pedagogy which constitutes an important component of the academic programme of the department, attention is also devoted to the pursuit of research in which the members of the faculty have made useful contributions over a period of time. As part of its mission, the department shall continue to strive to achieve excellence, both in teaching as well as in research. Placement of the students after passing out from the Department has been most satisfactory. Many good students have become Assistant Professors in teaching institutes. Some of the students have also been selected for the posts of scientists in research organizations.

The faculty members are dedicatedly working in the research areas of Analysis, Differential Equations, Mathematical Modelling, Seismology and Solid Mechanics. All the teachers of the Department are actively engaged in publishing their research work in the Journals of National and International reputes (SCI and SCOPUS indexed). They are also visiting other institutions for delivering talks and lectures at national and international level. Several faculty members of the Department are members of various National Boards and Committees, Editorial boards of Journals and the Board of Studies and other academic bodies of other Universities
