Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Chair

In charge: Prof. S. K. Chahal, Chairman

Focus Area: Dalit Studies/Lower Classes’ Movements with Special emphasis to the Contributions of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule (1827-1890), the great social reformer and the father of Indian Social Revolution and his spouse Savitribai Phule.

The Chair was established by the University in the Department of History on 12 May 2010 as a result of the positive initiative taken by the then Chief Minister of Haryana himself in this regard. The Chair was established for the purpose to carry out concrete research work on Mahatma Jotirao Govindrao Phule, originally from Maharashtra, who throughout his life fought to attain equal rights for the lower classes and women.  The Chair reflects the University’s commitment to the cause of social justice propounded by our great social reformers like Mahatma Phule, Savitribai Phule and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

The University has provided a budget for running all the Chairs established in the different University Teaching Departments. There is, however, no separate budgetary allocation for this Chair.

The Chair has encouraged the Ph.D. and M.Phil. scholars to yield research on the different aspects on the studies of Mahatma Phule under the supervision of its In-Charge. We have organized National Seminars, Conferences and Extension Lectures at regular intervals under the aegis of the Chair on the different themes/aspects related to its focus area. In addition, the Chair organizes every year Mahatma Phule Jayanti and Mahatma Phule Nirvana Day Programmes on 11th April and 28th November respectively on regular basis.

It is also noted that during 2019-21, Dr. S.K. Chahal, Professor-in-Charge of the Chair, joined as a Fellow in the prestigious Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla where he wrote a lengthy monograph on the project entitled Hindu Social Reform: The Framework of Jotirao Phule. His monograph was published by Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla itself in 2022 which has been considered as a unique research contribution in the field of Mahatma Phule Studies in the academic world.
