About Us
Department of Biochemistry is running Master’s and Ph.D. programmes in Biochemistry since 1991. Department of Biochemistry has an intake of 60 students (plus 25 additional/supernumerary seats) in M.Sc. program. Number of seats varies in Ph.D. program depending upon the vacant seats available with the faculty. The curriculum of M.Sc. is in alignment with NEP 2020 with effect from session 2024-25 having relevance for local, regional, national and global concerns and direct bearing on Employability/Entrepreneurship/Skill development. Students also learn through seminars, experiments, group discussions, quizzes and summer/Industrial training during this program. The syllabi of competitive examination viz. UGC-CSIR JRF/NET and industrial requirements were also taken in consideration while framing the M.Sc. syllabi so that students can diversify for academia, research and industry. The department has well placed, proud alumni who is serving various sectors such as teaching, research, industry, administration in reputed Institutes in India as well as abroad.
Presently, the department has three well-qualified teachers (02 Professors and 01 Associate Professor), one DST-INSPIRE and two teachers in stop-gap arrangement. Thrust areas of research of faculty members is single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in Type II diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases, purification and characterization of enzymes, exploring probiotics, assessment of ameliorative effects of plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) and plant growth regulators (PGRs) on stressed wheat plants; synthesis and characterization of biomass derived nanomaterials for biological and environmental applications. Faculty members are running extramural research projects. The faculty members have earned distinction in the form of national and international awards like the DAAD fellowship, UICC fellowship, Young Scientist projects cum award, Fellows of academic bodies, DST travel grant to attend conference and research award for highest impact factor.
Department of Biochemistry has a collection of about 1500 books in its Library, computer lab with Wifi/LAN facility, ICT enabled classroom, girl’s common room, teaching and research laboratories and instrument room equipped with latest instruments for research.
Scope of Biochemistry
Biochemistry is the chemical basis of life. Biochemistry has expanding scope and plays crucial role in research in the fields of health, nutrition, biomedical, environmental sustainability and pharmaceutical and agriculture sciences. A deep understanding of the underlying principles of biochemistry has helped in recent advancements in biotechnology, microbiology and industrial applications. Students of Biochemistry pursue PhD, post doctorate in India and abroad. They are scientists, teachers in school, colleges and universities, serving pharma/diagnostic companies. Students have emerged as entrepreneurs as well. Students are also serving as academic and civil administrators.

Biochemistry is the epicentre of modern life sciences that integrates the biology with chemistry, medicine and technology. Subject of biochemistry addresses the day to day challenges in the field of health, nutrition and environment. The department of biochemistry is committed to holistic growth and development of our students and for excellence in teaching and research. The focus of faculty is in nurturing curiosity in science, critical thinking analysis and ethical understanding and responsibility among the students and research scholars. We strive to provide the dynamic academic atmosphere in consonance with National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasizing upon flexibility, multidisciplinary learning, skill-development and experiment based learning orientation towards research and hands on laboratory training. The curriculum is designed so as to equip the students with a strong conceptual foundation and exposure to engaging contemporary fields of Molecular Biology, Pharmacovigilance, Clinical Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Genetic Engineering and Omics in Biology. Internship and seminars are the essential part of curriculum. Students are encouraged to undertake dissertation. Students actively participate in various departmental, community-oriented and cultural activities.
Research is the pillar of our department. Faculty and students are engaged in interdisciplinary research of social importance exploring the environmental sustainability, health and functional foods. The department also prepares the students for diverse career paths in academics, industry and entrepreneurship.
