The Department of Library and Information Science is the oldest department of its kind in the state of Haryana and has completed half a century of its existence. The Department commenced the B.Lib.Sc. programme in 1969, followed by the introduction of the M.Lib.I.Sc. programme in 1986 and the Ph.D. programme in 1988. All these programmes are being offered continuously by the Department. Additionally, for a certain period, from 2006 to 2017, the Department also offered the M.Phil. programme in Library and Information Science.
Being a professional discipline, curriculum revision has been a regular and ongoing activity of the Department. During the second decade of the present century, the curriculum at both the bachelor’s and master’s levels was revised on four occasions. The Department strives to equip students with the skills and competencies required to effectively meet the challenges of all types of libraries and information centers.
The Department’s alumni have held and continue to hold prestigious professional positions such as Professors, University Librarians, and Chief Scientists in various universities and other national-level institutions. The graduates of the Department are also placed in several state and national-level organizations. Every year, a significant number of students qualify the UGC-JRF and NET examinations.
The research programme of the Department has so far produced 63 Ph.D. scholars, while 32 research scholars are presently pursuing their Ph.D. programmes.

The Department of Library and Information Science is one of the oldest departments of its kind in the state of Haryana. The Department has completed more than fifty years of service in the field of education.
The journey of the Department began in 1969 with the introduction of the B.Lib.Sc. course. Later, the M.Lib.I.Sc. course was started in 1986, followed by the Ph.D. programme in 1988. All these courses are still being offered successfully. For a certain period, from 2006 to 2017, the Department also offered the M.Phil. programme.
Library and Information Science is a practical and professional field. Therefore, the Department regularly updates its courses to meet the changing needs of society and advancements in technology. The main aim of the Department is to prepare students who can work confidently in all types of libraries and information centers.
The former students of the Department, proudly known as alumni, are working in important positions such as teachers, librarians, and scientists in various universities and national institutions. Many graduates of the Department are also employed in government and private organizations. Every year, several students from the Department qualify national-level examinations such as UGC-JRF and NET.
The Department is also actively involved in research. So far, 63 students have completed their Ph.D. from the Department, while 32 research scholars are currently pursuing their doctoral studies.
In brief, the Department of Library and Information Science continues to contribute to education, research, and society by producing skilled professionals and dedicated scholars. The Department remains committed to learning, progress, and service in the years to come.
