Gulzari Lal Nanda ji's last wish was that his ashes be kept in Kurukshetra itself. As per his wish, after his death, his ashes were buried in Gulzari Lal Nanda Memorial. Under the aegis of Kurukshetra Development Board, the foundation stone of Gulzari Lal Nanda Memorial was laid by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on 4 July 1999 in the presence of Union Home Minister Lal Krishna Advani, Human Resource Minister Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi, Haryana Chief Minister Chaudhary Bansi Lal and His Excellency Governor Mahavir Prasad Ji. Gulzari Lal Nanda National Unity and Peace Institute was inaugurated by His Excellency Governor of Haryana Dr. A.R. Kidwai on 4 July 2006. Kurukshetra University took this institute on a lease of 30 years on 9 February 2010. Vice Chancellor of Kurukshetra University, Lt. Gen. Dr. D.D.S. Sandhu decided to spread the ideology of Gulzari Lal Nanda ji to the masses and started a new institute in Kurukshetra. This memorial has been named as Sh. Gulzari Lal Nanda Centre of Ethics, Philosophy, Museum and Library by Kurukshetra University. Under the aegis of this centre, many programmes are organised throughout the year to spread his Gandhian ideology to the common people through educational activities.

Gulzari Lal Nanda Library and Museum

A community library has been established in Sh. Gulzari Lal Nanda Centre of Ethics, Philosophy, Museum and Library, in which all the newspapers as well as many magazines based on contemporary topics and Rojgar newspapers are available. About 3,000 books on various subjects are available in the community library. The Kurukshetra University administration is committed to make this library more rich. Besides this library, a small museum has also been established in the centre in which many memories related to the life of Gulzari Lal Nanda have been collected and displayed. The entire story of his life has been exhibited in the museum through pictures. Many of his personal items kept in the museum are a centre of attraction for the visitors.

Contribution of Gulzari Lal Nandaji in the development of Kurukshetra

Bharat Ratna Gulzari Lal Nandaji left Gujarat in 1967 and made Haryana his workplace. Here, in the Lok Sabha elections held in 1968, he was elected as an MP from Kaithal Lok Sabha constituency. When the Lok Sabha was dissolved in a short period, Nandaji again contested the Lok Sabha elections from Kaithal Lok Sabha in 1971 and once again became an MP. Whenever Nanda ji got an opportunity in his political life, he played his role in the reconstruction of Indian society by laying the foundation of many social, religious and cultural institutions. It will be called the good fortune of Haryana state that a dedicated seeker like Gulzari Lal Nanda decided to make the holy land of Kurukshetra his karmabhoomi and in 1968, he established Kurukshetra Development Board for the protection, promotion and development of the pilgrimages of Kurukshetra. Nanda ji made a momentous contribution in the development of the holy land of Kurukshetra by serving as the Chairman of Kurukshetra Development Board from 1 August 1968 to June 1990. Nanda ji developed the great cultural and religious heritage of Kurukshetra by facilitating it for 22 years, the result of his consequential efforts is that today Kurukshetra is known as the cultural capital of Haryana. Under his guidance, the renovation of all the pilgrimage sites of Kurukshetra, Sri Krishna Ayurvedic College, Sannihit Sarovar, Geeta Janm Sthal Jyotisar, Naghrid Tirtha Pundri and Pehowa was completed. The efforts he made to restore the glorious past of Kurukshetra land are incomparable. Nanda ji has contributed considerably to the modern form of Kurukshetra that we see today. On 15 January 1998, Gulzari Lal Nanda ji, a supporter of Gandhian ideology, passed away and a great social worker was separated from the Indian people. Keeping in mind, the imperative contribution made by Gulzari Lal Nanda to Haryana, the Haryana government decided to build a memorial in the memory of Gulzari Lal Nanda ji on the banks of Brahma Sarovar in Kurukshetra.
