About W.S.R.C

The Women's Studies Research Centre, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra was established in February 1989. Supported by the University Grants Commission over the past twenty years of its existence the centre has been contributing to the pursuit of a more comprehensive, critical and balanced investigation of the cause of gender disparity by analyzing the structural and cultural factors and help develop alternate concepts, approaches and strategies for development. As part of the critical theory women's studies has served as an instrument that questions the traditionally held premises, theoretical categories and in addition to class, ethnicity, religion and caste as tools of analysis, gender as a social category has been included in the understanding of social reality. The Women's Studies Research Centre, KurukshetraUniversityis in the 3rd Phase of the University Grants Commission that is the highest phase for the purpose of work allocation and funding.The centre offers regular courses in Women’s Studies for students, University and College Teachers, Development Functionaries, Women Grass-root Workers, Panches, Sarpanches etc.

FACILITIES

Library

The Centre has a rich collection of books, newsletters, journals, reports and periodicals. The Centre has approximately 2500 books and 15 Journals, national and international relating to Women’s Studies. The library subscribes to most of the important Women’s Studies Journals. Project reports, Census reports, Reports of the National Commission for Women are also documented in the library. The Centre has updated its library recently by adding 100 new books relating to Women’s Studies.

Information on Seminars and conferences held recently

  • WSRC organized a special lecture for students of the University on ”Swami Vivekanand ke Chintan mein Nari Bodh’’ by Shri Shriniwasji, a social activist in collaboration with Dean Students Welfare on 8 January 2018.
  • Launched a drive on “Chhatra Se Chhatra Ka Sashaktikaran” where 3 students of Women’s Studies who are already having degree in Law made girl students of the campus aware of their legal rights. Starting from Jan. 2018 these students interacted with female students of different departments and girls hostel of Kurukshetra University.
  • On the occasion of International Day of Women and Girls in Science the Centre organized two days event on “Dreams and Aspirations of Girls in Science” for female students and research scholars of science and engineering faculties of the university in collaboration with Vigyan Bharti Haryana and Indian Science Congress Association New Delhi on 12-13 February, 2018. On the first day poster making and slogan writing competitions on the themes relevant to Society and Science were organized and on the second day Interactive Session was organized in which Dr. G. Anupama, Commissioner, Faridabad Division and Shri Jai Kumar, National Secretary General, Vigyan Bharti, New Delhi encouraged the participants towards pursuing career in science. The session was presided by Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Dr. Kailash Chandra Sharma.
  • WSRC organized an awareness camp on Female Foeticide and Importance of Girls Education in village Mirzapur, Kurukshetra on 8 March 2018 on the occasion of International Women’s Day. The students of the centre enacted a street play and marched a rally in the village.
  • Organized a national seminar on “Gender Equity in Science and Technology for Sustainable Development” on February 21, 2019 in collaboration with Vigyan Bharati, Haryana. About 120 female faculty members and research scholars in STEM from universities and colleges in Haryana attended the seminar.
  • On the occasion of International Women’s Day, March 8, 2019 the centre organized an awareness camp on Crime against Women in village Palwal where more than 50 rural women and girls participated.
  • In collaboration with ICSSR North Western Regional Centre, Chandigarh organized a National Workshop on “Empowering Women through Legal Awareness” on March 28-29, 2019. In this workshop about 60 female faculty members and Research Scholars of Universities in North Western region participated.

Information on Achievements

Achievement Area

  • The Centre has been placed in Phase-III (which is the highest phase) in the XI Plan by the UGC Standing Committee on Women’s Studies based on its work and contribution to the discipline. The Phase III Centres are to serve as Nodal Centre for teaching/research and documentation for the region and develop as Advanced Research Centres.
  • Women’s Studies Research Centre through its Stitching and Embroidery Centre is imparting skill development training among rural women of underprivileged section as a part of Kurukshetra University’s commitment towards the society.
